FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY. HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH FASHION WELL
FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY – Munich
What distinguishes fashion photography from other types of this artistic craft?
The promoted product, i.e. clothing, styling, jewelry or other accessories, should stand out in the photo while emphasizing the type of beauty, figure or personality of the model. This dual nature requires the photographer to show skill or intuition in constructing the composition of the photo, so that the model, background and arrangement of individual elements create a harmonious whole and do not overshadow the advertised outfit.
But how do you get the perfect composition? First of all, you need a specific idea, how to display the outfit in the photo – this can be done by manipulating the light and adjusting the appropriate colors of the model’s or model’s surroundings. The atmosphere of photography depends on the client’s vision, the specifics of a particular brand and its target group.
Contrary to packshots, i.e. minimalist photos of products on a white background,
clothes should be presented in a more extensive arrangement that will reflect the specificity of a particular brand from the fashion industry. From the lens of a creative fashion photographer, there will be shots with a context characteristic for a given style of clothes, the prevailing trends or the purpose of the creation.
How does this help with sales in the fashion industry? First of all, clothes are not worth the value resulting only from the origin of a given brand or designer, but also from a specific purpose, a situation in which the photographed outfit will be perfect.
As part of fashion photography, photos are taken not only in the studio, but also in many different arrangements. It can be a home, business, urban, natural environment, as well as many others – it all depends on the client’s vision.
In addition, it is important to match the promoted product, i.e. in this case an item of clothing, to a specific styling that will show the future buyer one of the possibilities of composing an outfit.
THE RIGHT CREW – MAKEUP, MODEL, STYLIST
A professional photo session requires equipment, as well as a team depending on the advancement of the project – assistants and a make-up artist, stylist, hairdresser and model who is the main “living” protagonist of the photo.
Make-up artists, stylists and hairdressers are indispensable because they care for the “flawless appearance” of models throughout the sessions. Assistants, on the other hand, are helpers in the preparation of the scenery and setting the lamps – they help us find and “maintain” the best shot.

The basis is communication with the model,
you have to explain what to do and how to behave. The model cannot see what the photographer sees in the camera and therefore requires specific instructions from him.
Choosing a model for a session is also not a simple task,
even in the era of graphic “beautifiers“. We often hear that a model must have “this something”. Sometimes it is not enough to have the right height, dimensions, pretty face, etc. The model must match the idea of the campaign, look in a way that attracts attention and encourages to use or purchase a service / product. Currently, people with original appearance are more and more popular in this industry than classically beautiful. The gaps between the teeth, an androgenic figure, and even unusual skin defects (such as model Winne Harlow’s vitiligo) may become not a disadvantage, but an advantage in some campaigns.
